Cristina De Middel worked for ten years as a photojournalist before shifting towards a conceptual practice that questions the relationship between truth, reality, and photography. In 2012 she produced The Afronauts, the starting point of a decade-long exploration of the role of images in the construction of stereotypes. She has extended her practice to curating — LagosPhoto, PhotoEspaña, World Press Photo — and published more than fourteen books. Member of Magnum Photos and president of the agency between 2021 and 2024.
Born in Rio, father and grandfather, he began his career documenting Brazilian popular festivities. Between 2010 and 2014 he continued his training at the Escola de Fotógrafos Populares da Maré. His visual language is documentary and poetic, non-assertive: images that leave space for the audience to complete them. He currently works around human rights and popular imagination.
Photographer specialized in the preservation of photographic and audiovisual archives. Since 2017 she has worked on the recovery of public and private collections, with a focus on care and activation of visual memory. Her practice combines technical knowledge, management, and research, seeking to expand access to documentary heritage as a basis for identity construction.
